KUWAIT: The lack of oxygen combined with high water temperatures and toxic pollutants caused the fish kill that was discovered near Ras Al-Ardh beach, according to the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). It confirmed that no signs of red tide bacteria were detected off Kuwait's shores. Tests conducted on samples indicate that lack of oxygen caused the death, while water temperatures were touched 33 degrees Celsius; up by five degrees from the average 28 degree Celsius," said Dr Suleiman Al-Mutar Director of Agriculture and Fish Resources Department in the KISR.Furthermore, he confirmed that none of the samples contained the form of bacteria responsible for the large-scale localized fish die-off that Kuwait experienced in 2001. Dr Al-Mutar explained that the accumulation of garbage at the semi-closed locations where the fish kill was detected caused anaerobic bacteria to emerge, producing sulfuric acid that creates bacteria that absorbs oxygen from water.
