Eid Al-Fitr holidays in Kuwait Declared

KUWAIT CITY: First day of Eid will be Tuesday on all Gulf countries except Oman. “According to astronomical calculations and visibility conditions, Monday, Aug 29th, will be the last day of Ramadan and Tuesday, Aug 30th, will be the first day of Eid Al-Fitr,” well known Kuwaiti astronomer Dr Saleh Al-Ojairi told Al-Watan Arabic daily.

Al-Ojairi called on decision-makers in Kuwait and the Islamic Arab world to shun differences and avoid controversy when it comes to the sighting of the crescent and declaration of the first day of Eid Al-Fitr. He added that differences among Sunnis and Shiites are the main cause of controversy in this issue.

Meanwhile, northwesterly winds are expected to taper off in the next hours, to be coupled with receding dust and low waves at sea, said the director general of the meteorological department of the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation.

The winds have picked up since the morning hours today, spewing moderate dusts and resulting in high waves at the sea, said Mohammad Karam in remarks to KUNA.

Gulf Air plane skids off the runway at Kochi

The Gulf Air aircraft with 137 passengers and six crew members on board that landed at the CIAL here on Monday shot off the runway and got stuck in the slush. Officials said that the flight GF 270 touched down the tarmac at 3.55 a.m. and slipped off the runway. Seven passengers sustained injuries. Of this, the condition of two is serious.

One of the passengers who sustained multiple fractures when a Gulf Air flight from Bahrain overshot the runway while landing at the Cochin International Airport Limited in the early morning hours of Monday underwent an emergency surgery at a private hospital at Angamaly.

According to sources at the Little Flower Hospital, Said Muhamad, 47, of Mathur in Palakkad district, has sustained fractures on the ankle of the right leg, left rib and left elbow. He was undergoing surgery at the time of reporting.

Mr. Muhamad, one of the 137 passengers aboard the Gulf Air flight, works in an automatic door shop in Saudi Arabia. He boarded the flight to Kochi from Dammam via Bahrain on Sunday at Indian time 5.30 p.m. A few more passengers were brought to the hospital with minor injuries. They were administered first aid and were promptly discharged.

According to airport sources, Gulf Air flight, GF 270, hit an air pocket and was unstable during its approach to the Kochi airport for landing before eventually overshooting the runway and coming to a grinding halt in the slush at around 3.55 a.m.

'No more social networking websites at office'

Kuwait: The Civil Service Commission prepares to launch efforts following the Eid Al-Fitr holiday to monitor the activity of government employees in order to detect any delinquencies committed during working hours which include using social networking websites while at work.

People have noticed state employees ignoring their daily tasks while being busy with their cell phones which they use for chatting or accessing their Twitter and Facebook accounts, as well as use personal laptops to browse the Internet and browse through newspapers", said CSC undersecretary Mohammad Al-Roumi in a recent statement, adding that complaints have been made against staff members ignoring their tasks to tend to personal matters or to handle transactions for their friends in other departments.

Air India Express flight from Kuwait makes emergency landing

Kuwait: An Air India Express IX 394 Kuwait-Kochi- Kozhikode flight, with 61 passengers on board, made an emergency landing at the airport here on August 25th morning after the pilot reported a hydraulic problem.

All passengers are safe, airline sources said.

The pilot of the flight IX 394 with six-member crew reported hydraulic problem half-an-hour before it was to land following which emergency support was provided, the sources said.

Expatriates versus locals in Kuwait energy sector

'Dasha' begins 23rd pearl-diving expedition

Kuwait: With the rigorous training over, the big day finally arrived yesterday for the young Kuwaiti divers participating in the 23rd Pearl Diving Expedition as their voyage formally began. The traditional dasha or farewell ceremony for the 180 young participants in this year's event was held at the Kuwait Sea Sports Club (KSSC) headquarters in Salmiya, before the young sailors, aged between eight and 22, began their nine-day voyage in search of precious pearls in the waters off Khairan Resort, around 90 km south of Kuwait City.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MSAL) Undersecretary Mohammad Al-Kandari, KSSC Vice-Chairman Ahmed Al-Ghanim, and KSSC Secretary General Ali-Al-Qabandi. Speaking with the Kuwait Times just before the voyage began, Al-Qabandi revealed that he isn't expecting a large harvest of pearls from this year's expedition. "Many people are now exploiting the area for the same purpose, so I think, this year's harvest will be even smaller than last year," he explained. Read More.............

'Awqaf Ministry committed to mosque's charter'

Kuwait: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs said yesterday that it was committed to the Charter and message of the mosque, as well as its key role in the Muslim community. The ministry said in a press statement that as the mosque occupies a prime place in the Muslim community, it should able to spread its message to the fullest in the best interest of the society as a whole.

Both scholars and worshippers should be committed to a set of principles which ensure that the mosque achieves its objectives. The ministry said through the issuance of (Charter of the mosque) with a set of principles and objectives, it wanted to clarify the message of the mosque by placing necessary controls for the safety of faith.
