KUWAIT: Kuwait University staffs are reportedly deeply disappointed at Education Minister Ahmad Al-Mulaifi's decision to increase the number of new student places available there for the upcoming academic year to 8,000, and angry at his use of what they see as blackmail to force them to accept the increased student numbers. Speaking on condition of anonymity, one KU academic condemned the minister's declaration during a recent meeting with faculty members that those who would not accept the increased student number should submit their resignation. "The [university's] higher council members said it was a direct threat," said the academic. "The minister doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that increasing the number of students without considering the current situation is a big, costly mistake.
